Good-bye Classical Music
St. Olaf College, you could have done better…
St. Olaf College has decided to sell WCAL: Classical 89.3 to Minnesota Public Radio.
While the College has convinced itself this is a good decision for itself and for the students (it’s all about the $), I cannot begin to understand how they can come to that decision as a benefit for all. They are taking away a wonderful resource from the state of Minnesota (one of the two classical music stations will be shutdown), and taking away a connection to College for some of the alumni — another way to prevent the general public from hearing Christmas Fest — most of us already cannot go see it in person, you have to be a wealthy alumni to see it in person — hearing it on the radio was the only way to be able to experience any of it, and now that will be taken away as well.
All I can say is, this is very disappointing.

Special Good News
Hi everyone!
When we got home (FL travelers … hope you had good flights!) last night we heard a very excited phone message from Melissa. In fact, it took about a half dozen listenings to finally make out what she was saying as there was so much excitement in her voice! The good news was that she was part of a group of NDSU Landscape Architecture students who won second place in a national design competition sponsored by the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association. This is a real thrill for her and just made her day! I went to the website and am enclosing a copy of this association’s press release. Take special note of paragraph 5. The prize money gets split first with the college and then the group of three divides their half equally … but prize money to boot! To say the least, Melissa was just floating!
And other good news from her … the camp director moved her from camp secretary into a counselor position for the rest of the summer. An e-mail from her indicated that she is currently out on the trail with a group from Brookings, SD. A much happier daughter now!
The only questionable news from her was that someone slashed 76 tires in the staff parking lot at camp. Will have to wait until she returns from her current trek to learn how that claim is being handled and whether the perpetrator was caught. Good grief … always something devilish going on somewhere!
