legal file swapping

A judge in Los Angeles, California has ruled in favor of file swapping online. A quote from the article:

… the ruling appeared to state clearly that decentralized peer-to-peer software such as Gnutella is legal, in much the same way that the Sony VCR is protected by law.

About time.

telemarketers

A New Idea for Fighting Back

A friend and I were talking the other day about many things and during the course of our conversation he mentioned his new approach at dealing with telemarketers. It is not the best plan for all, since it does still take up some of your time. However, it can be fun every so often. Consider this:

Recent Telemarketing Call

Telemarketer: Hello, Mister Ives. I am calling to offer you a reduced subscription rate for the (local paper). Ordering a subscription with the paper … (et cetera). Can I sign you up?

Paul: Will you send me a free t-shirt to help me consider?

Telemarketer: No, but we do help you save 70% over the regular newsstand cost.

Paul: How about a free hat? I’ll consider your paper, if you send me something free.

Telemaketer: … (et cetera)

As the conversation continues more and more free and giveaway items are asked for. Finally:

Telemaketer: (hangs up)

Paul: (smiles, thinks: victory)
